Warnings to employers and employees over fake medical certificates

Monday 25 August 2008

Recent newspaper reports have highlighted an overseas website offering fake medical certificates to Australians and this has caused concern among doctors in this country. The website advertises that it can provide fake sick notes and medical certificates for workers in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

Australian workers can apparently purchase two copies for $40.00 and the documents will be delivered in five working days. Disappointingly, the website even goes so far as to offer advice to “customers” on what medical excuses could be used to get out of coming to work and what dates should be included on the sick note.

The Australian Medical Association has warned that people presenting a fake medical certificate risk serious consequences of their actions because it means that they are knowingly misleading their employer and those touting the fake certificates are acting fraudulently.

People need to remember that a medical certificate is a legal document and by using one of these fake documents creates a range of serious issues for all involved.
