Old tank fuels new footpath delays

AN OLD fuel tank dating back many decades has been uncovered during work to upgrade the footpath along Kinghorne Street in Nowra.
The rusting fuel tank, believed to be from the old Harrison’s Shell Garage located on the land occupied by Nowra Mall, was uncovered just over a week ago amid efforts to revitalise the footpath.
The tank was believed to have been installed during the 1920s or 1930s for Harrison’s Shell Garage, which later became known as Westwoods.
An environmental consultant was called in to examine the tank, and recommended it be cleaned out and filled with a mixture of sand and cement.
The tank took 2.8 cubic metres of sand and cement to fill it.
The remediation efforts caused a short delay to work on the footpath, which resumed late last week.
Revitalisation work on the southern side of Junction Street has been completed, with the focus recently shifting to the northern side on Junction Street.
Shoalhaven City Council expects the project to be completed by the end of August.
