Victory for Mobil at Castle Hill
BY HELEN GREGORY 06 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
THE owner of the Mobil service station at Castle Hill is celebrating a victory he will be allowed to erect banner signs on its back fence to direct customers into the petrol station.
Franchisee Avedis Varvarian met with MP for Castle Hill Michael Richardson and Hills mayor Peter Dimbrowsky on Thursday to discuss his concern about customers not knowing how to get to the petrol station.
``I was very impressed; both were very responsive, brilliant, laid back and approachable,'' Mr Varvarian said.
``They pretty much now see how hard it is for the businesses and have come to the party about me putting up a sign [on the back fence, facing traffic on the Terminus Street Ring Road].
``It is now my job to get that professional signage up there in the next few weeks.''
Cr Dimbrowsky said the council was happy to assist Mr Varvarian.
``Allowing signs is a really easy thing we can do to help and we're happy to reach out and do what we can,'' Cr Dimbrowsky said. ``It's the least we can do to give local businesses a hand through challenging and hard times as we work out the issues of the ring road.''
Cr Dimbrowsky said he would also raise the matter at the July traffic committee meeting.
He will ask whether some local traffic from Dural could use the recently closed part of Old Northern Road, in between Crane Road and Terminus Street.
``It's only a proposal that we can take to the committee, because it is an RTA road, but we'll see if we can do something to help the businesses.''
The News reported on June 22 that the Mobil had suffered a drop in sales of 80per cent since the section of road outside the station was closed to traffic.
Mr Varvarian and his neighbours said customers did not know about the traffic change and were not aware they could enter the closed section of road if they were going to the businesses.
``The community has been so supportive of our business and we are so grateful,'' Mr Varvarian said.
``Petrol is a grudge purchase, it's not something you have fun with and go shopping for.''
